Forbes has officially listed Kylie Jenner as the world's youngest 'self-made' billionaire and the internet is having none of it.
It doesn't even matter if you keep up with the Kardashians or not, one way or another they manage to creep in your lives and pop up in your newsfeed like annoying ads. From them spawning babies to showing up at prestigious events barely clothed, everything they do makes headlines. "Why are you writing about them, then? The IRONY!" I'll tell you why. Forbes has officially listed Kylie Jenner as the world's youngest 'self-made' billionaire and I can't help but wonder if they are even aware of what the term 'self-made' stands for? Sure she runs a cosmetic company but wasn't she playing in millions already?
The 21-year-old has dethroned Mark Zuckerberg the absolute mastermind who gifted us with Facebook and has become the youngest billionaire in history, according to Forbes' calculations, of course. The Kardashians rose to fame when they got their very own reality TV show Keeping Up with the Kardashians on E! in 2007. In fact, before Robert Kardashian played a vital role in the infamous O.J. Simpson murder trials, nobody was aware of the family's existence. Good times.
But, here we are. At age 14, Kylie collaborated with major brands and started her own clothing line with her sister Kendall Jenner. A few years later she founded Kylie Cosmetics and launched an app which rose to #1 in Apple iTunes Store which forced Time Magazine to list the Jenners as the most influential teens in the world. Kylie is now one of the most followed celebrities on social media and has a net worth of over a billion.
Right after Forbes announced Kylie Jenner as the world's youngest self-made billionaire, Dictionary took one for the team and decided to correct Forbes for the second time. "Haven't we gone over this? Self-made: Having succeeded in life unaided," they replied to Forbes and their tweet got viral. They also added a link to self-made's definition, so whoever termed Kylie as a self-made billionaire can go educate themselves first. The same people who think that Kylie is 'all natural' are the ones who believe she is self-made. Fight me.
Kylie, on the other hand, has thanked Forbes for listing her as the youngest billionaire, "I didn’t expect anything. I did not foresee the future. But (the recognition) feels really good. That’s a nice pat on the back." Forbes reporter Natalie Robehmed also spoke about Kylie's success and how she made it big. "The beauty of Kylie Cosmetics, which Jenner started in 2015, is its minuscule overhead—and the outsize profits that go straight into Jenner’s pocket. Her empire consists of just seven full-time and five part-time employees. Manufacturing and packaging are outsourced to Seed Beauty, a private-label producer in nearby Oxnard, California. Sales and fulfillment are handled by online merchant Shopify."
"Her shrewd mother, Kris, takes care of finance and PR in exchange for the 10 percent management fee she siphons from all of her kids. Marketing is done mostly through social media, where Jenner has a massive following. She announces product launches, previews new items and announces the Kylie Cosmetics shades she’s wearing directly to the 175 million-plus who follow her across Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter," she added.
While the dedicated and loyal fans of the Kardashians and Jenners have congratulated Kylie, many just can't get over the self-made part. "Kylie Jenner is not a “self-made billionaire” her family was already worth millions and incredibly famous. All she did was leverage her fame, fortune, and family name," tweeted a user. "Kylie Jenner is not a self-made billionaire, she would be serving you frappuccinos at Starbucks if it wasn't for that Kim Kardashian and Ray J sex tape," tweeted another.
“Self-made” She reeks of generational wealth and privilege https://t.co/C3PjNNNVK4— mar(CO₂) (@TheMarcoIslas) March 5, 2019
Well, the devil works hard but Kris Jenner works harder. Love them or hate them, there's no escaping them. Kylie Jenner may not be self-made but she is now a billionaire at 21 and there's no stopping her. Congratulations, Kylie!
The Kardashians and Jenners are the reason aliens don't visit us. Kthxbye.
