The Disney dark-fantasy blockbuster has wrapped up filming and Angelina Jolie is returning for the highly anticipated sequel.
It comes as no surprise that Disney decided to go ahead and make a sequel of Maleficent; the original movie was a MAJOR hit! Directed by Robert Stromberg, the movie earned more than $750 million worldwide, becoming not only one of the most successful ever made but also the highest grossing Angelina Jolie movie of all time. The dark-fantasy Disney movie was loved by fans worldwide and even the critics couldn't help but praise the work of art. It won numerous prestigious awards and also bagged itself an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design.
The popularity of the movie was so wild that after a year Disney announced that they were working on a sequel in 2015 revealing Linda Woolverton would be returning to write the screenplay and Joe Roth will produce the film. Now, five years after the original, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is all set to release and longtime fans of the movie and Angelina Jolie are absolutely thrilled!
The movie began filming last year in spring and is all wrapped up. Announcing the same, Joachim Rønning, the director of the movie, took to his Instagram and posted a picture of the crew captioning, "That’s a wrap on Maleficent 2 - and what a ride it’s been! A big thank you to this amazing UK crew for spending the summer with me at Pinewood Studios - so close to Heathrow, yet so far away :) I hope you all get some well deserved time off before your next adventure."
In addition to Jolie who was always on board with the idea of a sequel, Elle Fanning is also returning to reprise her role as Princess Aurora. "Here’s your first look at Angelina Jolie & Elle Fanning as Maleficent & Aurora on the set of Maleficent II," Walt Disney shared snaps of the two on their Twitter account. As far as Prince Philip is concerned, Brenton Thwaites will be replaced by Harris Dickinson. Michelle Pfeiffer of Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp is set to play Queen Ingrith in the sequel.
Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor has also joined the star cast of Maleficent 2, and according to Screenrant, will play Maleficent's love interest. Game of Thrones fame Ed Skrein is playing the supervillain in the new movie and Jenn Murray, Kae Alexander, Fernanda Diniz, and David Gyasi are a part as well. Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville are all set to return to resume their roles.
In a recent interview, Fanning opened up about her experience of working with Jolie. "I’ve never done a sequel before, so it should be fun to re-visit a character many years later. That is something I’m very excited about. Also, being reunited with Angie is pretty cool. She’s just a powerhouse on set; the way that she works, she just has this power and respect around her. It’s so funny because people always ask, 'Oh, does she give you advice all the time?' and it’s not so much like that. I think just watching her…and seeing what a great mother she is."
"All of her kids are there and she’s walking around—like, last time I remember, she was walking around in the whole Maleficent outfit with two kids on each arm. She's a working woman and a mother, and that example is such a great one for me to see. You can do it all," she added. Jolie also previously talked about how much she loves the film, "What sets [the film] apart is that it has action and it does have a lot of adventure, but it is something that you haven’t seen before. There is something very unique to this film. It has a message in it that is very strong."
"Maleficent 2 continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within," reads the first official synopsis of the sequel. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is all set to release this Halloween season on October 18th. It was previously set to release on May 29, 2020! The sooner, the better we suppose! Will you be watching it?
